This Year’s Baccalaurete

What is a Baccalaurete?

The term generally refers to a non-denominational ceremony held a few days before high school graduation. Unlike the massive commencement exercises held in stadiums or arenas, baccalaureate ceremonies offer a quieter, more intimate opportunity to pause and reflect on this rite of passage, hear a keynote speaker, and student testimonies that offer advice to the graduating class and enjoy students' musical talents. This program is completely student led by the class officers.

The Yukon Baccalaureate Program traces its origins back to the class officers and students of the Yukon High School Class of 1995, who desired to leave a lasting spiritual impact on future generations. Prior to their initiative, Yukon had not hosted a baccalaureate for 25 years. Recognizing the significance of this event, the class officers were determined to revive the tradition.

However, they encountered a hurdle when Yukon Schools informed them that the baccalaureate could only proceed with an outside sponsor to help develop and implement the program. Undeterred, the class officers, along with several students, forged a partnership with the Yukon Ministerial Alliance to establish the new Yukon Baccalaureate Program.

Since its inception in 1995, the program has remained true to its original format, which is completely student-led. It features student testimonies, performances, and motivational speakers, all aimed at inspiring and uplifting the graduating class.

For the past 27 years, Wanda Gamble and her daughter Marci Moore, along with Tom Arnould, the Preacher of Good News Church in Yukon, Oklahoma, have played instrumental roles in facilitating the Yukon Baccalaureate Program. Their dedication and commitment have helped sustain the program's mission of fostering spiritual growth and leaving a positive impact on Yukon's graduating classes.

How we got started

Stained Glass Window of a Church

Yukon Ministerial Alliance

The partnership between the Yukon Ministerial Alliance and the Yukon Baccalaureate Program has been integral to the program's success and impact over the years. Comprised of 21 community churches, the Ministerial Alliance serves as a unifying force, strengthening cooperation among churches and supporting local mission work. Since the inception of the Baccalaureate Program, the Ministerial Alliance has been a steadfast supporter, providing funding and facilitating connections with local speakers to enrich the program's content.

The introduction of the first-ever scholarship program through the Baccalaureate this year represents a significant milestone in the partnership between the Ministerial Alliance and the program. By offering scholarships to Yukon seniors pursuing studies in ministry, biblical studies, or missionary studies, the Alliance demonstrates its dedication to nurturing future leaders in the faith community and empowering young individuals to pursue their calling.

The collaboration between the Yukon Ministerial Alliance and the Baccalaureate Program underscores the importance of community support in advancing the program's mission. Their partnership not only enhances the program's reach and impact but also serves as a testament to the transformative power of collective efforts in fostering spiritual growth and educational opportunities for Yukon's youth.
